Cognitive processing in design synthesis and concept combination

This PhD research investigates the determinants and outcomes of design concept combination. The project aims to test for a potential relationship between the similarity of a pair of design concepts and the likelihood of various types of combined concepts being produced.

The research situates design concept combination as one of many important elements of design synthesis. Empirical research is situated against a multi-level review of design synthesis research, spanning design process models, protocol study and psychology literature. The research adopts knowledge and methods from psychology and language research and represents the first steps towards a cognitive model of design concept combination.
