Incubation and mood in product design

In product design, idea generation can be facilitated by putting the design problem aside temporarily before returning to it, allowing for a period of ‘incubation’. This PhD research investigates the variables influencing the ‘incubation effect’ in design, with particular focus on the role of mood.

Findings will help inform designers as to the activities they should engage in when taking a break from ideation, and will also provide a theoretical insight into the relationship between mood and design cognition.
