ImagineD at Curiosity Live http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/imagined-at-curiosity-live/ http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/imagined-at-curiosity-live/#respond Sun, 01 Dec 2019 16:49:29 +0000 http://www.imagine-d.uk/?p=1396 The ImagineD team were at the Glasgow Science Centre for Curiosity Live in November.

Our researchers Chris and Gerard spent four days presenting an interactive exhibition of our cognitive and neuroimaging work to children and families.

We had a great time meeting the designers of the future – and hearing their solutions to some of the design tasks from our studies!

New publication in Journal of Engineering Design! http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/new-publication-in-journal-of-engineering-design/ http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/new-publication-in-journal-of-engineering-design/#respond Tue, 08 Oct 2019 13:31:40 +0000 http://www.imagine-d.uk/?p=1356 Our latest publication, “A novel systematic approach for analysing exploratory design ideation” has been published in Journal of Engineering Design.

You can find the paper on Taylor & Francis, Researchgate and Strathprints.

“In this paper, we provide a means to systematically analyse exploratory ideation for the first time through a new approach: Analysis of Exploratory Design Ideation (AEDI). AEDI involves: (1) open-ended ideation tasks; (2) coding of explored problems and solutions from sketches; and (3) evaluating ideation performance based on coding.”

ICED 19: Marketplace and conference paper http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/iced-19-marketplace-and-conference-paper/ http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/iced-19-marketplace-and-conference-paper/#respond Tue, 18 Jun 2019 09:52:06 +0000 http://www.imagine-d.uk/?p=1331 The ImagineD team will be at this year’s International Conference of Engineering Design (ICED ’19) in Delft.

Dr Laura Hay will be presenting a paper entitled “The Novelty Perspectives Framework: A new conceptualisation of novelty for cognitive design studies”. The paper forms part of our broader research programme as part of the ImagineD vision.

We’re delighted to announce that this year we’ll also be presenting our ongoing research in neuroscience and cognition at the ICED marketplace: an entirely new format for researchers to showcase their research at ICED. We’re excited to share our research using fMRI, EEG, and novel behavioural experiments. Come along to the marketplace on Wednesday, 7th August between 11:45 and 13:30 to find out more!

Highly commended award at Strathclyde Images of Research competition http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/highly-commended-award-at-strathclyde-images-of-research-competition/ http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/highly-commended-award-at-strathclyde-images-of-research-competition/#respond Wed, 08 May 2019 16:20:29 +0000 http://www.imagine-d.uk/?p=1316 We were delighted to receive a highly commended award from the judges at this year’s Images of Research competition for our entry “ImagineD: Realising your imagination”.

The ImagineD research project envisions a future for Computer Aided Design where designers can seamlessly realise their imagination in the digital world. To achieve this vision, we are combining multidisciplinary expertise to study cognitive, neural and gestural activity in creative design. This image shows our vision and the results from our neurological research, highlighting the regions of the brain associated with product design engineering ideation.

Poster abstract accepted for the annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/conference-abstract-accepted-for-the-annual-meeting-of-the-cognitive-neuroscience-society/ http://www.imagine-d.uk/uncategorized/conference-abstract-accepted-for-the-annual-meeting-of-the-cognitive-neuroscience-society/#respond Tue, 19 Feb 2019 11:13:54 +0000 http://www.imagine-d.uk/?p=1306 We are pleased to announce that our poster abstract, “The neural underpinnings of creative design” has been accepted for the 2019 annual meeting of the Cognitive Neuroscience Society

We will be travelling to San Francisco to present out work in March 2019. The conference takes place March 23-26 and involves “invited symposia, symposia, posters, awards, a keynote address, and most importantly the opportunity to connect with colleagues.”

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together researchers from around the world to share the latest studies in cognitive neuroscience.

For more information please check the conference website.

The paper synthesises functional neuroimaging studies of visual creativity. Seven functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) and 19 electroencephalography (EEG) studies were reviewed, comprising 27 experiments and around 800 participants. A meta-analysis conducted on the fMRI studies suggests that the thalamus, left fusiform gyrus, and right middle and inferior frontal gyri may be involved in visual creative ideation, a key component of design ideation. Additionally, the EEG studies suggest that there may be a tendency for decreased alpha power during visual creativity compared to baseline, although findings are inconsistent.
